The Very Reverend Jeffrey John says he was blocked from role as Cardiff’s Bishop of Llandaff by Church elders due to his civil partnership and support for gay marriage
A GAY vicar has slammed church leaders as homophobic after he was turned down for a top bishop’s job.
The Very Reverend Jeffrey John was denied the role as Cardiff’s Bishop of Llandaff, despite coming top in a vote.
Dr John, Dean of St Albans, Herts, claims he was told it would be “too much of a headache” if he was given the job.
Although he received the most votes, Dr John failed to receive the two thirds required under rules set by the Church in Wales.
The experienced clergyman alleges he was blocked by two elders believing it “would bring unwelcome and unsettling publicity to the diocese”.
He claimed the church elders refuse to accept him because he has been in a civil partnership since 2006, although he says he was celibate in line with Church teaching prior to this.
The Dean also publicly supports same-sex marriage.

In 2012, he wrote in Church Times that “theologically, ethically, and sacramentally, there is no difference between a gay couple and a heterosexual couple who cannot have children”.
“So, yes, same-sex marriage can be as holy and sacramental as heterosexual marriage. Yes, God is in favour of gay marriage and so should the Church be.”
The Church in Wales said: “We deny any allegations of homophobia, or that the bishops are homophobic.”
