Heavy rain is on its way

GEELONG and the Surf Coast are set to be inundated with a thick rain front sweeping across the Western District.

The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast a very high chance — nearly 100 per cent — of rain this afternoon, dissipating to showers in the evening.

Winds are anticipated to be east to southeasterly 20 to 30 km/h tending south to southeasterly 25 to 35 km/h in the evening.

Nearly 50 millimetres of rain has fallen over the Warrnambool region since 9am Tuesday although there has been less rain in the Hamilton district with a still sizeable 30 millimetres during the same timeframe.

Less than one millimetre of rain had fallen in the Geelong region between 9am and 4pm on Tuesday, although that was set to change within hours.
