Topshop tycoon takes hit in wealthiest list along with Sports Direct owner Ashley who drops 25% of his wealth
SIR Philip Green’s dreadful 2016 saw him plunge down the list of the world’s wealthiest billionaires – as he lost £900million.
The Topshop tycoon and his wife Tina, are now worth £3.8billion, down from £4.7billion, according to US magazine Forbes.
It said the couple were “perhaps the most vilified billionaires in Britain”, as they dropped from 206th richest to 339th richest in the world.
Their fall came after a year in which Sir Philip was widely blamed for the collapse of BHS, the department store chain he sold to a serial bankrupt for £1.
Just last month Sir Philip agreed to pay £363million to help fill the black hole in BHS’s pension.
Other British losers on the list included Sports Direct founder Mike Ashley whose fortune dropped by 25 per cent to £2.1 billion.
The biggest gainer overall was Amazon founder Jeff Bezos whose wealth went up a staggering £22.2 billion to £58.7 billion, an increase of 37 per cent.
The Forbes billionaires list is the annual ranking of the richest people in the world and features a a record number of 2,043 billionaires this year.
