Sydney, Melbourne among the most expensive

Sydney and Melbourne are two of the most expensive places in the world, both jumping six places in the past year in a league table of 133 cities.

The Economist Intelligence Unit’s latest worldwide cost of living survey, which gauges the relative costs of countries, shows Sydney rising to 14th position and Melbourne to 15th, which editor of the survey Jon Copestake puts down to the appreciation in the Australian dollar in the last year or so.

“This movement is in sync with a number of other Asian cities, which have come to dominate at the top of the ranking,” he said in a statement on Tuesday.
