Woman sleeping in swag on Cable Beach 'run over'

A Broome woman is in a serious condition after she was run over by a car while sleeping in a swag on Cable Beach in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Police say the 39-year-old woman had been camping with a group of friends at the popular tourist destination, and had turned in for the night.

It is understood she was run over by a Toyota Landcruiser driving on the beach.

The woman is believed to have received serious injuries, and was rushed to Broome Hospital for priority treatment.

She will be flown by the Royal Flying Doctors Service to Perth for additional medical treatment.

A 56-year-old man is currently assisting police with their inquiries into the incident.

According to the Broome Shire motor vehicles and motorbikes are not permitted above the high water mark, in sand dunes and in lagoon areas, and the speed limit on all beach areas is 15km per hour.

Camping on the beach is also restricted to designated camping grounds, caravan parks and on private properties with permission from the owner.
